Loreto has a traditional tourist vocation. At the very beginning, when this little sleepy fishing village was discovered by the fishermen, there were no hotels in town. The first one was 'The Flying Sportsmen Lodge' (Club Deportivo de Vuelos) started in 1951 by an american, Mr. Edward Tabor, one of the tourism pioneers in Southern Baja California - with an excellent business vision. This name came from the fact that The Flying Sportsmen Lodge was provided with a dirt airstrip. Later, the Mission and Oasis Hotels came up to fulfill lodging necessities in Loreto, and the investors were people from Town. La Pinta Loreto Hotel was built as part of the hotel chain placed along the Baja Peninsula. in 1976, the Mexican Federal Government chose Loreto to be one of the five tourist areas to be developed by FORATUR -The National Trust Fund for the Development of Tourism. The Government constructed El Presidente Hotel, which, from time to time, changed names and operations systems, and it finally was sold to mexican private investors. It works with the 'All Inclusive System" and only adults are allowed. Lately, the Plaza Loreto Hotel came up, and some others which work like motels. All of them owned by local people.
